Fiber Arts???

Being a fiber artist in western Kentucky can be a lonely thing. There are only a handful of us, and it can be difficult to connect. That’s why the Mayfield/Graves County Art Guild hosts the Fiber Artists Group every Tuesday at 11:00 at the Ice House Art Center in Mayfield.

Maybe you’re thinking, But I’m not a fiber artist. Are you sure? Fiber arts encompasses many more mediums than most people would think.

When people in western Kentucky think of fiber arts they naturally tend to think of quilting, but that’s a very narrow view. Others think of the needle arts, such as spinning and knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and needlepoint. Weaving may even come to mind.

Here’s a thought:  What about scrapbooking? Isn’t paper a fiber? Of course it is! Expand that to collage, and you’ve got a whole new art form that also uses fiber. Then there’s papermaking, which is obviously another fiber art. Stuffies and plushies are becoming more and more popular, as are fiber-sculpted and mixed-media art dolls. Felting is an old fiber art that’s seeing a revival, with revolutionary new techniques and materials coming into play. Don’t forget origami and its sisters, tea bag folding and iris folding. More and more people are getting interested in art quilting and, with it, surface design and hand-dying of fabrics. With leathers and wood fibers often being used in fiber compositions, as well as spun and extruded nylons, polyesters, and plastics, the options are limitless!

The good news? If you’re interested in any of the above-mentioned fiber arts, or have one that you want to try that’s not listed, there is probably an artist in the guild who has experience with that medium, knows at least a little about it, or can help with finding resources or instruction. And there’s nothing like being with fellow artists!

We’d like to hear from you. In which media are you interested? If Tuesday at 11:00 won’t work for you, what would? The Mayfield/Graves County Art Guild exists to promote and advance the arts in Mayfield, Graves County, and the surrounding region. We want to help local artists become successful and productive. Give us a call or drop us an email and let us know how our Fiber Artists Group can help you!
