Gourd artworks may be brought to the Gallery beginning Saturday, September 3. Deadline for receiving work is 5:00pm Friday, September 9. Artwork shipped by USPS, FedEx or UPS must be received by September 7 and must include pre-paid return postage. Labels for artwork will be available from our website or may be obtained at the Gallery when you bring your work in.
This year’s categories are:
Abstract and Geometric Narrative (telling a story) Garden Flora and Fauna Miscellaneous
Up to three works may be entered by each artist. The entry fee is $20 for one, two or three works. The Best of Show Award this year is $150 cash. There will be two prizes awarded in each of the four categories: $50 for first place and $25 for second. We reserve the right to group works into the Miscellaneous Category if there are not enough works in one of the other categories to have a fair competition.
We will be seeking sponsors for the cash awards; let us know if you can help! We will be posting the sponsors’ names on our website and on our facebook page.
Sarah Haig will be the judge for our "All About Gourds" juried competition. Sarah is Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at UT Martin. She's from far northern Upstate New York (might as well be Montreal, she says). She earned both a BFA and MA from SUNY Oswego in Graphic Design and an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She frequently participates in our exhibitions at the Icehouse and we're very pleased to have her help with the Gourd Festival.

Arts & Crafts vendors, food trucks and live music will be featured at this year’s Gourd Patch Arts Festival to be held at Mayfield’s Icehouse Gallery on Saturday, September 17. The festival opens at 9am and continues until 3pm in and around the Icehouse. This year’s event will have something for everyone!
The Gourd Festival is the Icehouse Gallery’s principle fundraiser. It attracts gourd art lovers from throughout the region and across the nation. It has been held annually for the past 12 years and this year’s event should be the biggest yet. We will have the annual gourd race car derby, the “All About Gourds” exhibit in the Gallery, a silent auction, bake sale, live band, performances by MSU’s percussion ensemble playing music on instruments made from gourds, more than 30 art and gourd-related vendor booths, and a Food Court featuring several food trucks, each with a different menu.
Ronn Moyers will be conducting workshops at the Gallery on gourd race car construction for the derby. Four workshops are scheduled: Tuesday, August 21 from 4:30 until 6; Saturday, August 27 from 10 until noon; Thursday, September 8 from 4:30 until 6:30; and Saturday, September 10 from 10 until noon. Workshops will have a minimum of five students. Contact the Icehouse to arrange special workshop sessions if you have a large group of students wanting to make gourd race cars. Price for each workshop is $10 including the race car kit. Ronn will have paint and various items to help students decorate their cars for the big race.
Inside the Icehouse Gallery visitors will see gourd artworks submitted for the annual “All About Gourds” annual juried exhibition. This exhibition attracts gourd art from throughout the region. A Silent Auction of items donated for the festival will be held with final bids to be announced at 2:30pm.
Mayfield Graves Tourism Commission will have a booth at this year’s event to help inform visitors of the various other events that are going on around our region throughout the year. Mayfield Bikeway will also have a booth. A “petition of support” will allow visitors to voice their enthusiasm for the proposed Bikeway project. The routes for the Bikeway will be unveiled at the festival. The Laurel Oak Garden Club also will be one of the sponsors that will have a booth.
