Impressions 2009

In selecting the 67 pieces which make up the exhibit, juror Todd Birdsong looked for presentation, skill, content and vision.  The show includes a painting by 12-year-old Gregory Willett of Fancy Farm, Kentucky as well as works by more experienced professionals.  Mr. Birdsong states, “While the majority of the work was traditional in terms of visual exploration, each work selected for the exhibition allowed me to experience a moment of emotion and resonated with me in some way. I appreciate artist works that have a powerful sense of vision and concept regardless of their training or technical mastery of their chosen media. I believe that those artists who are creating spirited works are not only growing personally, but professionally as well.”  He considered it “an enlightening experience to see all of the quality work produced by some of this area’s talented artists.”  Sixty-two artists from Kentucky and Tennessee submitted over 140 entries to be considered for this year’s show.

The First Kentucky Bank Best of Show Award was presented to David Sheridan of Martin, Tennessee for his abstract painting Birth of the Irish as Viewed from the East.

Carolyn Daniels of Benton, Kentucky won the Betty Cook Memorial Award for First Place in Painting for Golden Chicken. Second Place Painting, sponsored by Mayberry Antiques, went to Diane Shaw of Martin, Tennessee for Texture of Wind.

Benton, Kentucky’s Alexis C. Trammel placed first in Drawing, the award sponsored by Barbara Heath, for her charcoal drawing Negative #28.  Second Place Drawing, sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Donald Dowdy, was awarded to Marie Dolchan of Dexter, Kentucky for Mark Jackson.

The First Place Sculpture award, sponsored by Mary Jackson-Haugen, went to Bowling Green, Kentucky artist Karen Fetterman for her carved and painted gourd, It’s Tropical.  Second Place Sculpture, sponsored by Mayfield Tourism Commission went to Jeromy Bell of Union City, Tennessee for Primal Scream.

First Place in Photography, sponsored by Mayfield Messenger Corporation, was awarded to Robin Martin-Holmes of Murray, Kentucky for Not Just A Figure Head.  Jill Whitesell of Fulton, Kentucky won CTI-sponsored Second Place in Photography for her color digital photo Man of La Concha.
