The Piecemakers The Ice House hosted a month-long citywide celebration of quilting with demonstrations, bazaars, and a group exhibition of quilted fiber arts sponsored by the Piecemakers Quilt Club of Graves County.
The show, which was on display until May 1st , featured remarkable constructions of fabric, threads, beads and lace, some of which draw from historic and traditional quilting patterns and techniques along with others that explore innovative ideas and methods. The colorful exhibit showcased fine craftsmanship in techniques such as felted wool applique, hand beading, paper piecing, stenciling, embroidery, hand painting, net overlay, thread-play, and more.
Two quilts by Fran McEachern of Mayfield previously were on display in the National Quilt Show in Paducah. "Tribute to a Kentucky Quilter" features a Log Cabin block arrangement and is based on an 1875 quilt by Martha Tribble Hieatt of Henry County. Fran's quilt is reduced in size, but the fabrics and pattern match the original work by Hieatt. Fran's "Dear Jane Quilt" is a near replica of the one by Jane A. Stickle of Shaftsbury, Vermont. Fran's version is composed of more than 5,000 fabric pieces and took more than a year to complete.
Other quilts included Janette Crider's "Antique Lace Crazy Quilt," which is made from antique lace that was found in a truck that she purchased from a local aution in the 1960's. Roxanne Ferguson's "The Piece Rose" features batik while her "Avant Garden" is stenciled and embroidered. Javada Smith's "Twising Ribbons" is composed of shiny beads and threads on a pieced quilt.
