The Mayfield/Graves County Art Guild was founded in July, 1990. It seeks to provide educational programs in aesthetic appreciation and art techniques to all age levels, to provide exhibition space for the display of work by local and regional artists and art groups, to present occasional special exhibits by noted artists from outside the region, and to assist the school systems and parents in identifying and developing emerging talent from among the student population throughout the region.
|
The Guild offers practicing artists the opportunity to display works in the gallery through solo or group shows. The Guild provides guidance and a workspace for artists who may not have studio space of their own. The Guild serves the entire community and seeks to create programs that are beneficial to all levels of interest and expertise. The Guild also provides an additional venue for local educators who wish to expand the training of their students beyond the art classrooms in the public schools. The Guild welcomes tours from school groups of all ages.

The gallery, workshop, and weaving areas have adjustable track lighting and a commercial-grade display system. The Guild currently occupies 3,200 square feet, more than half of which is designated as exhibition space. The workroom/classroom areas can seat up to a total of 25 students. The Guild presents ten to twelve exhibits throughout the year, including four major annual events, IMPRESSIONS, YOUTHFUL IMPRESSIONS, Arts in the Community, and All About Gourds.

Our annual non-juried Arts in the Community show each August typically includes works by over 40 visual artists and poets. The folk-art tradition of gourd sculpture and painting was the theme of last years most-visited exhibit in what has become an annual event called All About Gourds. Every third Saturday of September, the Guild is the focal point of the Gourd Festival Festival that attracts several hundred participants.
Held each November, IMPRESSIONS, our largest group exhibition, draws artists from Tennessee, Illinois and Missouri in addition to the West Kentucky region to compete for cash prizes and honors. YOUTHFUL IMPRESSIONS, is our juried show for middle and high school students.
The Laurel Oak Garden Club sponsors the outdoor sculpture garden.
