POSSIBLE FUTURE SHOWS TO KEEP IN MIND
Veterans Show: June/July 2011
This will be an exhibit to honor local veterans and to show off their talents. The art can be about their service, but doesnt have to be. It will be open for any veteran. We might also include time-of-service photos. If you would like to participate in this show, call 247-6971 or email [email protected].
TEOTWAWKI Show: June/July 2012
Whether you believe the predictions for 2012, or you think nothing will happen at all, I thought it might be interesting to give artists an opportunity to depict their own versions of TEOTWAWKI (an acronym for The End OF The World As We Know It).
The art for this show could be serious or humorous, rooted in fact or completely made-up. It could depict destruction or Utopiait is all up to the artist. For some of our guild artists, it would be a departure from their normal work. Consider the idea and send me an email to let me know what you think. We have a year and a half to work on it. Fiber Arts??? Being a fiber artist in western Kentucky can be a lonely thing. There are only a handful of us, and it can be difficult to connect. Thats why the Mayfield/Graves County Art Guild hosts the Fiber Artists Group every Tuesday at 11:00 at the Ice House Art Center in Mayfield. Maybe youre thinking, But Im not a fiber artist. Are you sure? Fiber arts encompasses many more mediums than most people would think. When people in western Kentucky think of fiber arts they naturally tend to think of quilting, but thats a very narrow view. Others think of the needle arts, such as spinning and knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and needlepoint. Weaving may even come to mind. Heres a thought: What about scrapbooking? Isnt paper a fiber? Of course it is! Expand that to collage, and youve got a whole new art form that also uses fiber. Then theres papermaking, which is obviously another fiber art. Stuffies and plushies are becoming more and more popular, as are fiber-sculpted and mixed-media art dolls. Felting is an old fiber art thats seeing a revival, with revolutionary new techniques and materials coming into play. Dont forget origami and its sisters, tea bag folding and iris folding. More and more people are getting interested in art quilting and, with it, surface design and hand-dying of fabrics. With leathers and wood fibers often being used in fiber compositions, as well as spun and extruded nylons, polyesters, and plastics, the options are limitless! The good news? If youre interested in any of the above-mentioned fiber arts, or have one that you want to try thats not listed, there is probably an artist in the guild who has experience with that medium, knows at least a little about it, or can help with finding resources or instruction. And theres nothing like being with fellow artists! Wed like to hear from you. In which media are you interested? If Tuesday at 11:00 wont work for you, what would? The Mayfield/Graves County Art Guild exists to promote and advance the arts in Mayfield, Graves County, and the surrounding region. We want to help local artists become successful and productive. Give us a call or drop us an email and let us know how our Fiber Artists Group can help you!
